One of the last years of Chris-Craft’s production of mahogany powerboats, the Super Sports were the sleeker, more sexy looking boats on the lake…and usually one of the fastest. This Super Sport was in slightly rough ‘user’ condition. There was some rot in the starboard side planks and behind the fiberglass fins. Also had multiple tears and worn spots in the upholstery and flooring, the crash pad was loose and coming apart, large gaps between hullside planks, two broken bottom planks and generally expanded seams, worn deck vinyl and badly weathered exterior hardware.
We started with a new 5200 bottom, then rolled her back over to begin work on the rotted hullside planks. In removing those we discovered much more rot in the shelves (structure underneath the covering boards) which was replaced along with the same side covering board. New vinyl was added to the decks, then a complete strip, re-fairing, stain and varnish were in order. Although this exact upholstery material is no longer available, some repair was possible improving the overall appearance of the seats and engine hatch. The very rare ‘basket-weave’ flooring is no longer available either, so a traditional Chris-Craft Nautolex flooring was added, which actually made for a cleaner and more attractive interior. Also added an Iva Lite per the client’s request to ‘Chrome Up’ the deck a little more. The strong 327ci power was fine, just a general tune-up, the addition of electronic ignition, cleaning and painting of the engine. She is a strong running boat with lots of power. Although she did not go through a complete restoration, ‘ Best B.E.T.’ now shows and operates very well and will give the owner years of enjoyment without many of the traditional ‘woodie’ maintenance issues. (It’s always a relief to the boat owner to lift his engine hatch and see a dry bilge in a wood boat.)
Time to completion was about four months.
